This 5 day module is a general theoretical paper covering basic strata control theory applicable in all types of mining environments, surface as well as underground. The theoretical strata control knowledge required here is thus of a fundamental nature, and is not specific to any particular type of mining. Topics include:

  1. Stress & strain,
  2. Constitutive behaviour,
  3. Rock properties,
  4. Stress in rock & rockmasses,
  5. Rockmass properties.
  6. Geotechnical characteristics,
  7. Rock & rockmass behaviour,
  8. Fundamental principles of mining layouts and mining layout design,
  9. Mining support and mining support design,
  10. Investigation and evaluation,
  11. Drilling and blasting,
  12. Legal compliance and general management
  13. Investigation techniques,
  14. Rock breaking,
  15. Surface and environmental effects,
  16. Mining strategies in difficult circumstances
