“Gladwin Maphanga passed away at the age of 40 years and was married with four kids and excelled academically.”

Gladwin worked during his Geology and Rock Engineering career at South32, Nkomati Nickel Mine, Foskor Mining Division, Optimum Coal Holdings, Exxaro Coal, Anglo Platinum, University of the Witwatersrand and the Council for Geosciences.

He was in charge of the development and implementation of new technologies for technical services, projects and operations that will support new ways of mining and processing as part of the Anglo American FutureSmart programme.

“He will be remembered for his passion and to advancing mining rock engineering research and technologies.”

Navin held a Masters degree in Mining Engineering and a Rock Engineering Certificate.

“His 25 years of rock engineering experience ranged from operational, technical support, research and development and strategic executive management across the mining and mineral value chain.”

“Over the past 8 years Nin was appointed as the Unit Manager Seismology at South Deep where he functioned as the operational Seismic Specialist. “

“Nin contributed significantly to investigate and understand seismic mechanisms associated with the seismic triggers contributing to the various sources of events experienced on the mine.”

“Nin’s career at Goldfields stretched over a period of 26 years across most of the Kloof and Driefontein operations.”

“She enrolled at UNISA and completed her BSc in Archeology, receiving the prize as best student from the university upon her graduation.”

“After completing her initial degree there was no stopping this young and ambitious woman. She was to become one of the best female Rock Engineers in the country. ”
