The South African National Institute of Rock Engineering
is announcing the
SANIRE SYMPOSIUM 2022
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE IN ROCK ENGINEERING

symposium 22 announcementYou and your colleagues are invited to this unique event to reunite with the industry partners to reflect on how rock mechanics have evolved and exchanging new ideas and exploring the future in this field.

The Symposium will be targeted at all colleagues in the rock mechanics industries or professions, It will also benefit Interested practitioners , researchers, managers and others in the field of Rock Engineering.

Presentations will be arranged over two days.

The annual SANIRE RockBowl will be hosted on the afternoon of the 28th July 2022, followed by a Presidential Dinner in the evening.

You and your colleagues are invited to this unique event to reunite with the industry partners to reflect on how rock mechanics have evolved and exchanging new ideas and exploring the future in this field.

The Symposium will be targeted at all colleagues in the rock mechanics industries or professions. It will also benefit interested practitioners, researchers, managers and others in the field of rock engineering.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The Symposium will be targeted at Rock engineering Professionals, Practitioners, Researchers, Managers and others in the field of Rock Engineering.

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this event is to broaden participation and learning by opening the opportunity for innovative and challenging material that would not otherwise be available in other formats.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Rob McGill 0029Rob McGill
Rob is focussed-on and passionate about value-creation in the mining and minerals sector. With over 25 years of technical, operational and consulting experience, he has a strong track-record of project, portfolio and business optimisation and growth. Having started his career as a Rock Engineer in the deep-level gold mining sector with Anglo American, Rob moved through the ranks to become the Rock Engineering Manager at Mponeng and TauTona mines with AngloGold Ashanti, before moving into a project management role for growth projects in the group. Rob later joined the consulting and EPCM sector before starting his own consulting and advisory firm 6 years ago which now has some 30 people and two locations being Johannesburg and Brisbane.

Rob McGill 0029Dr. Gerrie van Aswegen
Dr. Gerrie van Aswegen, started his career as an exploration geologist until he resumed an academic life as researcher/lecturer mid 1975 and completed research towards a PhD. He joined the Anglo American Seismic Research Unit in 1985 and since then, he focused on fault stability, mine layout and seismic hazard, short term seismic hazard, seismic source mechanisms, the integration of numerical modelling with seismic monitoring and, best of all, the forensic analyses of dynamic deformation processes and published a few papers on these topics. His work included consulting projects for mining companies across the globe, which include Peru, Sweden, Canada, Brazil, Russia and Australia. He is a member of various societies such as the Geotechnical Advisory Board of El Teniente, Chile, the Geological Society of South Africa and an Honorary Life Fellow of SANIRE

Rob McGill 0029Dr. Roberts
Dr Roberts studied mechanical engineering at the University of Natal before being sucked into the world of rock engineering by Tony Jager and Leszek Wojno. He joined CSIR Miningtek in 1993 as a bursar and completed his MSc in “Testing of Mining Tunnel Support Elements and Systems for Hard Rock Mines”. He was then sucked into the world of modelling by Rob Eve and Ewan Sellers, and sent to Wales for four years to complete a PhD on Finite Element Modelling of Rockbolts and Reinforcing Elements. During this time he worked extensively on the Elfen finite element modelling code.
He was thereafter appointed as a researcher within CSIR Miningtek, and remained there for ten years, ultimately becoming a Principal Researcher and Research Group Leader for Rock Engineering. During that time he worked on many research projects for SIMRAC, Deepmine, Coaltech, Platmine and many private entities, usually providing modelling skills.
He then moved to Anglogold Ashanti as a Technical Assistant where he was involved with modelling for the Technology and Innovation Consortium Projects, including the bore-and-fill mining method. Here he was exposed to FLAC3D and Map3D. Six years later he moved back to the CSIR, this time as Principal Researcher for the Non-explosive Rock Breaking Project, which was run under the auspices of the Mandela Mining Precinct. Dr. Roberts is currently with Sibanye Stillwater as a Unit Manager for Modelling, performing modelling services and training as required, using ITASCA codes and Vantage.
His main interest is modelling, but he also gets all wobbly at the knees at the mention of instrumentation, stress analysis, and innovative rock breaking methods.

symposium 22 announcementCALLING FOR PRESENTATIONS

The symposium theme include, but is not limited to the latest advances in rock mechanics, modernized design approaches, back to basic rock engineering, environmental and safety risk management and interesting case studies in all rock mechanics industries.
